Common Mistakes

A beautifully lifted lash is one of the most satisfying results in the beauty industry. Clients walk out with that bright eyed, wide awake look and they feel incredible. But for the professional behind the chair, delivering that result consistently takes more than just knowing the steps. It takes understanding what happens when things do not go according to plan and knowing exactly how to correct it.

Every esthetician, no matter how experienced, runs into challenges. Uneven curls. Lashes that barely lifted. Results that fade in a week instead of lasting two months. These are not rare occurrences. They happen, and what separates a trained professional from someone who watched a few tutorials is the ability to identify what went wrong and fix it on the spot.

That is exactly why troubleshooting is one of the most important modules in The Brow Fixx Academy Lash Lift Course. We do not just teach you the process. We teach you what to do when the process does not go perfectly, because real clients have real lashes that do not always cooperate.

The 5 Mistakes That Trip Up Most Lash Lift Artists

Whether you are brand new or you have been lifting lashes for a while, these are the five issues that come up again and again. Knowing how to handle each one will completely change your confidence level behind the chair.

01

Uneven or Over Curled Lashes

Some sections curl tighter than others, or the outer corners look way too lifted.

Why this happens

Almost always comes down to uneven product distribution or inconsistent lash placement on the shield. If some lashes sit higher on the shield than others, they process differently and you end up with a lopsided result.

The fix is applying your solution with precise, even brush strokes and using a smaller brush to reach the corners where lashes tend to clump. Before you apply the setting solution, check your placement twice. Once for direction and once for tension. Those extra 30 seconds save you from a result you are not proud of.

Pro insight: Our course includes close up video demonstrations showing exactly how to check placement before processing. This single skill eliminates the majority of uneven lift issues. Learn more about shield placement techniques here.

02

Lashes That Barely Lifted

The lift looks weak or flat after removal. Client expected dramatic, got barely noticeable.

Why this happens

Two culprits: under processing or choosing the wrong shield size. Coarser, thicker lashes need more processing time than fine ones. If you treat every lash type the same way, some clients will walk out disappointed.

Shield size matters just as much. Smaller shields create a tighter, more visible curl. Larger shields give a softer, more natural lift. If the client wanted drama and you used a large shield, the result will not match their expectation no matter how perfect your technique is.

A strong training program teaches you to read each client's lash type, thickness, and length before you even pick up a shield. That assessment is what drives every decision you make during the service.

03

Frizzy, Dry, or Damaged Lashes

Lashes look rough and frayed instead of smooth and lifted. Clearly over processed.

Why this happens

Leaving the lifting solution on too long is the number one cause. Even an extra minute or two can push fine lashes past the point of a clean lift and into damage territory. Overlapping product during reapplication makes it worse because the lashes get a double dose of solution in certain spots.

Prevention is everything here. Follow the timing guidelines precisely and learn to recognize the early signs of over processing before the damage is done. After the lift, always apply a nourishing serum to condition and protect the lashes. That finishing step adds softness and shine while helping the lashes recover from the chemical process.

Pro insight: In our course, students learn to perform simple elasticity checks during processing. This quick test tells you whether the lashes need more time or whether they are ready to move to the setting step. It is one of the most valuable skills you will pick up.

04

Lashes Sticking Together or Clumping

Instead of a fanned out, separated lift, lashes are stuck in clusters.

Why this happens

Poor isolation or too much adhesive. When lashes are not properly separated before you apply the lifting solution, they process while stuck together and the result looks clumpy and uneven.

The fix starts before you touch any solution. Use a fine lash tool or comb to separate each lash on the shield. Apply adhesive sparingly because too much glue actually prevents proper lift instead of helping it. Work in small sections and take your time. Rushing through isolation is the fastest way to get a result that looks messy.

Perfect isolation takes patience, but it is the skill that turns a decent lash lift into a flawless one. There is no shortcut.

05

Results That Fade Way Too Fast

Client's lift drops after one or two weeks instead of lasting six to eight.

Why this happens

Usually comes down to the setting step. If you cut the neutralizer timing short, the lash bonds do not fully reform and the lift loses its hold quickly. It can also happen when clients do not follow aftercare instructions, things like steam, oil based products, or using a lash curler right after the service.

Make sure the setting cream gets its full processing time. Do not rush it even if you are running behind. And take 60 seconds at the end of every appointment to walk the client through aftercare. Tell them to avoid water, steam, and oil based products around the eyes for at least 24 to 48 hours. When clients follow proper aftercare, their lift can last a full six to eight weeks, which means happy clients and consistent rebookings.

Pro insight: Our course includes printable aftercare cards you can hand to every client. It takes the guesswork out of the conversation and makes sure they leave with clear instructions.

Why Social Media Tutorials Are Not Enough

Instagram reels and TikTok videos show you the process. They do not teach you the science behind why each step matters, how to adjust for different lash types, or what to do when something does not look right halfway through. That knowledge is what separates a professional from someone who is guessing.

What Professional Training Teaches That Tutorials Skip

A real lash lift course goes far beyond the application steps. At The Brow Fixx Academy, our training is built by Naomi Poshneh from years of real salon experience at The Brow Fixx locations in Santa Monica, Los Angeles, and Austin. Here is what that kind of education actually covers.

Troubleshooting Questions We Hear Often

How do I know if I have over processed lashes?

Lashes that look frizzy, dry, or excessively curled after the lift are signs of over processing. The key is learning to check elasticity during processing and following timing based on the individual lash thickness, not a one size fits all timer.

Can I redo a lash lift that did not take?

You can, but only after assessing the health of the lashes. Wait four to six weeks before lifting again to give the lashes time to recover. Re lifting too soon risks damage that could take months to grow out.

What is the best way to get even results every time?

Three things: choose the right shield size for the client's lash length, apply even tension when placing lashes on the shield, and check your placement under good lighting before applying any solution. Those three habits eliminate most inconsistency issues.

Do I need certification to offer lash lifts?

Most states require a cosmetology or esthetician license to perform lash lifts. Certification on top of that demonstrates you have received specialized training and gives clients and employers confidence in your skills. Check your state requirements here.

Why do some clients' lifts last longer than others?

It comes down to the client's natural lash growth cycle, how well the setting step was completed, and whether they followed aftercare instructions. Some people naturally shed lashes faster, but proper technique and client education maximize longevity for everyone.
